Dead Lines

Neither the laundromat, the grocery store, nor the pet store was able to distract me from the questions dominating my mind. Namely, how did Felicia's death fit into the larger Lazerite puzzle? Or did it? Could it be that Ricky Rhoades had nothing to do with the grave robbery or Felicia's death? Or was he guilty of one crime but not the other?

As I made the third trip up the stairs to my apartment, this time lugging a 30-pound bag of clumping kitty litter, I decided I needed to talk it out with someone before I lost my mind.

Panting from the exertion, I propped the bag against the kitchen counter, grabbed a sparkling water from the fridge, and collapsed onto the futon with my phone. Fred curled up next to me, demanding affection.

I obediently scratched his head as I punched in El's number. I remembered on the fourth ring, he'd said he was being fitted for a uniform today. His graduation ceremony was only a few days away.

Next, I tried Rochelle. She didn't know about Felicia's influence on me, but she knew Gran and I had found her body. She knew El and I were interested in the case. If I was careful about how I worded things, she would be a good brainstorming buddy. Rochelle didn't answer either.

I was staring at my phone, wondering what time it was in Massachusetts and if it would be worth the effort of filling Chelsea in on everything, when it rang.

It was Gran. "I can't talk long. I'll be home any minute." Her voice was low and rushed. "I found something at Felicia's."

The feeling that coursed through me was confusing. It was a strange combination of alarm and curiosity. I went with alarm first. "Gran, you shouldn't have been poking around Felicia's house. Remember, we said no snooping?"

"You said no snooping. I never agreed."

"You should have."

"Well, I didn't. Do you want to hear what I found or not?"

My jaw tightened with frustration. Of course I did, but as a loving, caring granddaughter, I couldn't admit that. It was irresponsible to encourage her. However . . . Curiosity won out. "What?"

"A list. A really strange list. It was in the back of her desk drawer. You know, the drawer you found the address book in?"

My gaze shot to the red address book sitting on a shelf inside the end table by the rocking chair. I'd forgotten all about it. "What kind of list?" I asked.

"Names. I recognized most of them. They were all people who lived in Liberty Grove."

"And why is this strange?" I could think of plenty of reasons Felicia might have a list of Liberty Grove people in her desk. It could've been a guest list or a prospect list for her business or a list of club members. There were a ton of clubs in Liberty Grove, and Felicia belonged to lots of them. She was a big believer in networking.

Gran lowered her voice even more. "Several of the names were crossed out.
